Chapter 1

He crested the small hill and looked down upon the savannah and smiled. The sun was just rising and was shimmering a vibrant red -alive and beautiful. Xander braced his walking cane, more a quarterstaff than anything else, into the soft dirt and sat down to watch the day begin.

//Little darlin' don't you see the sun is shining, just for you, only today. If you hurry you can get a ray on you, come with me, just to play Like every humming bird and bumblebee Every sunflower cloud and every tree I feel so much a part of this Nature's got me high and it's so beautiful I'm with this deep eternal universe, from death until rebirth.//

He loved morning here. He loved everything about Africa. It was like he had come home. He felt a part of everything here, all the life, everything. He could feel it deep inside him. It was an almost primal thing.

//The corner of the earth is like me in many ways
I can sit for hours here and watch the emerald feathers play
On the face of this I'm blessed when the sunlight comes for free
I know this corner of the earth, it smiles at me.//

Xander had been living on his own for a while. He had discovered a few Slayers, but had sent them on to England and the Council. It was so organized that he was pretty much alone for weeks or months on end...and he liked it like that. There was no one depending on him anymore. He was free.

//So inspired of that there's nothing left to do or say
Think I'll dream, 'til the stars shine
The wind it whispers and the clouds don't seem to care
And I know inside, that it's all mine
It's the chorus of the breaking dawn
The mist that comes before the sun is born
To a hazy afternoon in May
Nature's got me high and it's so beautiful
I'm with this deep eternal universe, from death until rebirth.//

The breaking dawn bathed his body with ruby rays of light, cascading over his tanned and toned bare chest... down his cut-off jean shorts, ending at his bare toes as they dug in the soft dusty dirt. He could hear the animals waking up and could see birds of different shades taking flight into the warming clear sky. It was all he could do to keep from crying, it was so emotional for him. He was in a place where he was finally on his own; no one to worry about, no one worrying about him, nothing to do but keep an eye out for any Slayers who might wander through. Besides that, this was his day... sitting in the sun, exploring the African landscape, living his life.

At last... he was home.

//The corner of the earth is like me in many ways

On the face of this I'm blessed when the sunlight comes for free
I know this corner of the earth, it smiles at me.//
