Prologue

Three friends walked out of the dark, crowded halls of Sunnydale High and into the sunlight.

"Wow that was boring" said the blonde as she headed toward the steps that led to the quad below

"I don't feel that boring covers it" the boy said in reply

"No boring falls short" continuing with the pointless banter

Eventually the red head comes up from behind the two and says.

"Even I was bored and I'm a science nerd"

"Don't say that" says the blonde

"I'm not ashamed it's the computer age, nerds are in" she says with a small smile, then suddenly feeling nervous that she might be wrong she looks to her friends and asks "They're still in...right?"

Xander Harris was beyond nervous knowing what he was about to do could be life altering so he asks his childhood friend not so subtly to leave. "Willow don't you have a thing"

For a moment the soon to be witch looks up slightly puzzled. "A thing?"

Suddenly understanding his meaning she clumsily makes an excuse to make her exit. "The thing..that...I have...which is a thing...which, I have to go to!" Turning on heel the red head makes a quick exit.

Pulling off her sunglasses Buffy turns to Xander curious as to what was up with Willow. "What on earth is her deal?"

Still extremely nervous about what the girl of his dreams reactions would be when he finished with what he has to say, he kept his reply short

"Oh she's Willow"

Finally gaining the courage to ask her he begins his rant. "Buffy I want to...there's this thing" taking a breath he tries to continue his speech "There's this thing I wanted to ask...talk to you about"

Looking a bit confused the Slayer replies "What about?" when she was met with silence she made the comment "Ok, now you're making me nervous"

Xander was ripped from his thoughts he looked up and began to recover "Nothing to be nervous about"

As the duo approached the stone bench in the middle of the quad Xander laughed nervously and told the boy occupying it to leave. Finally sitting down Buffy turns to face Xander to find what exactly he wants.

"Well" she looks at him expectantly

Taking a breath "You know Buffy, 'Spring Fling' is a...ti...time for students to ga...gather...Oh God!?! He took another steadying breath as she flashed him one of her smiles, his heart fluttered but he continued "Buffy I want you...to go to the dance...with me...you and me on a date...together"

Buffy Summers was in shock...Xander...Xander Harris wanted to go on a date! With her! From the time she showed up in Sunnydale she'd taken a liking to him but as soon as she found out her now best friend had a thing for him she knew he was off limits.

"I...I...I don't know what to say" truly surprised at her crush's request.

"Well you're not laughing, so that's a good start" she still had a look of shock on her face thinking he still had to convince her he once again continued on.

"Buffy I like you, a lot and I know that were friends and we've had experiences and fought some blood sucking fiends but I want more, I wanna dance with you." It looked as though she was about to respond but afraid she'd still refuse he began to grasp at straws.

"I just wanna have one dance with you. It may not mean anything to you but I want to be able to hold you, just for one night. It doesn't have to be some great romance or anything like that. I promise if you say yes it'll last me for the rest of my life" his eyes begging her for a chance to prove himself.

Buffy was now smiling softly at him; she then shifted a bit closer and said "Maybe I want it"

Now thoroughly confused "Maybe you want...what? What are you talking about?" he asked

"Maybe I want the great romance" she answered back "Maybe I want you to hold me...but not just for one night" her voice dropped to nothing more than a whisper but he'd heard exactly what she said.

Xander couldn't believe what he was hearing, he was almost sure that she was going to turn him down. He looked up at her his eyes searching hers, to see if there was any truth behind her words.

Still not entirely sure he said "Buffy, please be serious. I don't think I could take it if you were just messin' around. Just say no like I figured and I'll go salvage what's left of my pride"

When he finally did look into her eyes again he was shocked at what he found there, they were filled with a longing he'd never seen before and dare he say it...love? He really didn't know what to say but soon all thoughts quickly fled his mind as her lips descended onto his. As her scent surrounded him, whispers of vanilla and honey filled the air. All too soon the kiss ended and she pulled back slightly to answer his question.

"Yes Xander, I would love to go to the 'Spring Fling' with you. As your date...you and me together" Buffy said with a soft smile on her face. His response was not the one she was looking for.

"Ok Buff, you've had your fun, I kn..." Xander never got to finish because the blonde Slayer cut him off with a breath taking kiss. Unlike the kiss before which was soft and sweet, this one was filled with all the passion, devotion and love she felt towards this young man before her. When air finally became an issue they parted but made no move from their embrace.

She raised her hand to her face and brushed a lock of hair from her face. "So believe me now" she asked softly

He still couldn't believe that this wonderful in his arms agreed to be his. "Yeah, I believe you" taking a minute just to look at her he finally asked "So, what now?"

She smiled and stood up holding out a hand for him which I happily accepted. "I guess we're a thing, I mean if you want us to be"

His answer was almost instant "Definitely, I mean we're definitely a thing" she just grinned up at him and they began to walk out of the quad together.
