Chapter 1

Head like a rock spinning round and round
I found it in a hole sitting upside down
You point the finger at me but I don't believe

*****

Xander flops down as the world spins, scrabbling on his hands and knees to get away from the homicidal dead man. Half a second later, it disappears in a puff of dust that has him coughing, thumping his chest in an effort to clear it.

He picked his stake up from the freshly dug grave it had fallen into, and his head rose to see the Slayer giving him a Look, arms akimbo.

*****

Paint me a wish on a velvet sky
You demand the answers but I don't know why in my mind
There is no time

*****

"Xander!," Buffy reprimands him. "Why did you decide to come with me?"

"I... honestly don't know, Buff," Xander said cheerily.

"You should be living a normal life," the Slayer continues.

*****

But the little things they make me so happy
All I want to do is live by the sea
Little things they make me so happy
But it's good it's good it's good to be free

*****

"What makes you happy, Xander?," Buffy asks thoughtfully. "Why are you here, and not playing Mario or something?"

"I like the quiet," Xander shrugs. "All I want is to live here, by the sea, with my friends. The little things, they make me happy, you know?"

*****

So what would you say if I said to you
It's not in what you say it's in what you do
You point the finger at me but I don't believe

*****

"I think you should drop the Slayage," Buffy says, ignoring what he said. "The world won't end if you do."

If only you knew, Xander laughs in his mind. "Why don't you drop it?"

"What?," Buffy asks, wide eyed and surprised. "Me?"

"Yeah," Xander says, turning the tables. "I mean, you're just one person. The Watcher's Council has wetwork teams that kill evil the world over --I've been talking to the G-man. So you could retire, if the Council let you."

*****

Bring it on home to where we found
My head like a rock sitting upside down
In my mind there is no time

*****

The Slayer now looks unsettled. This is new territory, and unsettling for her. "Retire?"

"Sure," Xander says. "C'mon, let's go back to your place for hot chocolate."

"I-I can't," Buffy says.

"Sure you can," Xander says. "You've done it before."

The Slayer is quiet for the rest of the trip back, and is subdued once they enter her mother's house. Joyce makes them both a cup of tea, joking with Xander over artistic taste at her gallery.

But the little things they make me so happy
All I want to do is live by the sea
Little things they make me so happy
But it's good it's good it's good to be free

"I think I get what you meant, earlier," Buffy says, as they sip their drinks. She's sitting at the counter, her mum facing her on the other side with her friend by her. "Be happy with what you've got, right?"

"That's me in a nutshell," Xander grins.
