FADE IN:
EXT- TIGHT CLOSE UP OF THE MAIN ROAD
We see the small road, that leads to the base. All we can see
is the road as we follow it. It appears like any road anywhere.
But as we move up the road, we start to see things. First we see skid
marks on the road, then bullet casings. Then pieces of the gate on
the ground. Then we come to a boot; we keep going up, until
we see the boot's owner. He is very dead, and laying upside
down on the ground. We pan up, and out.
We are at the main gate. There are bodies everywhere. We pass the
guard house. Its large windows are shattered, and a guard is impaled
on a large piece of glass. We stay where we are to look in to the
compound. It's pure carnage. We can't even count the guards that
are dead all over.
CUT TO:
INT-HYPERION UNDERGROUND POOL AREA
The pool area of the Hyperion is like much of the
hotel, shut down. The main pool is dry, and dirty. It hasn't been
used in years. The windows high on the wall let in more than enough
daylight, but not any direct sunlight.
Cordelia is sitting at a table, next to the only working thing
in the place. The hot tub. Kristen is sitting in the hot tub, and
chatting with Cordelia.
KRISTEN
(smiling)
God, this is great. I can't believe you guys live here.
CORDELIA
Angel and Fred live here. The Host does when he
comes to visit, but I have a great apartment.
KRISTEN
(confused)
The Host?
CORDELIA
Long story. You'll meet him before long.
KRISTEN
(a little sad)
I just wish Xander was here to enjoy this.
He should have been here by now. He was going to
meet me here, after he got rid of the Council's trackers.
CORDELIA
I'm sure he's OK. That boy can get into trouble, but
he also has a weird knack of getting out of it.
(giggles a little)
KRISTEN
What's so funny?
CORDELIA
(smiling)
It's just Xander would love this. Two women sitting
around a hot tub, talking about him.
KRISTEN
Yeah, that sounds like him. You don't know how
many times I'd ask him to tell me stories about his
time in Sunnydale. You guys all worked together.
And all I got was the 'work for us or you're dead' speech.
It would have been nice to meet Xander that way.
Seeing him slaying demons...
CORDELIA
(in total girl talk mode)
You like him, don't you?
KRISTEN
(getting a little red)
He's...nice. But I get the feeling he
has some issues to work out first.
(tries to change the subject.)
One thing has been bothering me. Xander said that
you went up to another plane of existence or
something. So why are you back here?
CORDELIA
(thinks for a second)
I don't know. The Powers said that something was
coming to this dimension, and that I was needed. It's
been a few months now, and nothing's happened.
A sound causes them to look off screen.
CUT TO:
INT-POOL AREA ENTRACE
Angel is holding the door open, and swinging it back and forth.
Each time, a scraping noise is heard. He gives up on it, and walks
over to the two women.
ANGEL
(offhandedly to Cordelia)
We have got to get that fixed.
CORDELIA
(rolls her eyes)
Sure. Will that be before we fix the ice machine in the
main hallway, or the air conditioning in the fourth
floor rooms?
ANGEL
(gets the point)
OK, just one more thing to add to the list.
CORDELIA
So what did Giles say?
Angel sits on a nearby plastic deck chair, as Kristen leans
over the tub's ledge to hear everything.
ANGEL
Giles, Buffy and the rest'll be here in about an
hour. They're making good time. Apparently,
Sunnydale has been quiet for a few weeks. Plus
having Xander involved, no way the others are going
to miss this.
KRISTEN
So Mr. Giles couldn't find any info out from the
Council about Xander?
ANGEL
He said that he couldn't inquire about Xander without
bringing attention to them. And if Xander tries to
make contact while the Council is watching, it might get ugly.
KRISTEN
Well, at least I'll get to meet the much-talked about Scooby Gang.
Angel smiles a bit at the name while Cordelia leans over to Kristen.
CORDELIA
Hell, you already meet some with Angel and me. I'll bet
Xander already considers you a member of it.
KRISTEN
Me, a Scooby?
CORDELIA
Yeah, he started the darn thing so he could give out
membership. Granted membership isn't much, but...
(Cordelia stop mid-sentence and grabs her head in slight pain)
Oweeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Kristen jumps out of the hot tub instantly, and Angel is next
to Cordelia in less than a second.
ANGEL
(very concerned)
What is it, Cordy? A vision?
KRISTEN
Xander said her visions didn't hurt now.
ANGEL
(still holding Cordy but turns to Kristen)
Normally, they don't. But when the Powers want to
make sure we get the message, they give it a little extra.
Cordelia comes out of it slowly. She collapses into her chair.
CORDELIA
That was a whopper, all right.
ANGEL
What did you see?
CORDELIA
(trying to make sense of it)
I saw Xander!
ANGEL
Does the Council have him?
CORDELIA
No. I didn't see anyone that looked overly British. I
just saw Xander. He was fighting vampires.
ANGEL
Where at? I'll have the others meet us there, and
we'll...
CORDELIA
(holds up a hand)
No. I got the very strong message that we are to
keep out of it. I saw him in some place I've never
seen before. He and some others who I couldn't make
out, they were fighting vampires. A lot of 'em.
ANGEL
(concerned)
Did you see anything else, Cordy?
CORDELIA
Yeah, but I'm not sure how to interpret it.
It was a flash of Xander, and a word.
ANGEL
A word?
CORDELIA
Yeah. A big word in bold letters.
KRISTEN
What was the word after you saw Xander?
CORDELIA
(stares up at them)
Baptism.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
INT- MAIN HALLWAY SUB-LEVEL ONE
Two women in white lab coats are chatting, and waiting for
the elevator to come. The women are both from the research and
development arm of the command. They are Beth Meyers and
Julie Chen. We join them in the middle of their conversation.
BETH
You're not the least bit interested?
JULIE
Nope. I don't go for the 'boy next door' type.
BETH
Well then, what type do you go for?
JULIE
Well, that one with the red hair is OK.
BETH
There is no guy with red...tell me you don't mean Lt. Gerald.
JULIE
I can't help it if she has a great butt.
BETH
You know how the military feels about those kinds of comments!
The bell for the elevator is heard.
JULIE
Hey, that's who I am. If the guys with the guns can't
deal with it, they can kiss my...
The elevator doors open. We stay on the women's faces.
They look on in pure shock.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN ELAVTOR
The large group of 35 vamps is just looking at the women. Markus and the
Master are in front. The door starts to close, but not before the Master
reaches out. She grabs Julie by her coat, and pulls her inside the
elevator as the doors close.
As soon as the doors close, Beth gets over her shock a bit. She does the only
thing she can do. She screams.
A second later, three guards with M-16s run over to her.
GUARD #1
What's wrong?!
Beth can't do anything. She just points at the doors to the elevators.
GUARD #1 (CONT'D)
Ma'am, what is going on here? What about the...
Before the guard finishes, the doors reopen. It's the guard's time to react in
shock. The Master is holding Julie. She has two holes in her neck, with blood
leaking from them.
The Master tosses Julie at the guards. She crashes into them. They all get
knocked to the floor. Beth is able to quickly get back on her feet, as a group of
the vampires come out to attack the guards. Beth takes off down the hallway.
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL ONE CORRIDOR B
Beth rounds the corner at full speed. As she is running we can hear gunfire,
and screams coming from the elevators. She runs to the middle of the corridor.
There is a small red box on the wall. She swipes a gray card through a slot.
The box springs open revealing a large red button. Beth hits
it as hard as she can. Seconds later, red lights start flashing,
and a loud alarm is heard.
CUT TO:
TIGHT SHOT OF BETH'S FACE
Her mind is ready to shut down. This is too much for her.
She is leaning with her head against the wall. We can see a
few tears coming down.
BETH
(to herself)
Sure. A university research job would be boring!
How the hell am I supposed to...
Her head snaps up, and she stares down the way she came.
She looks more terrified, and bolts down the corridor. A few seconds
later, we see vampires running past where she just was. Chasing her.
CUT TO:
INT- SUB-LEVEL ONE CORRIDOR B (FURTHER DOWN)
Beth is running down towards the end of the corridor.
The vamps are only a little bit behind her.
CUT TO:
BETH'S POINT OF VIEW
A young male USAF airman comes out of an office door. He's
looking around trying to find out what's going on. Past him we can
see a metal security door coming down.
CUT TO:
FULL SHOT OF BETH
BETH
(sees the man, and the closing door)
Ah, hell.
Beth picks up speed. She does a running tackle on the airman. They fall
through the ground just under the closing door. They make it without
a second to spare.
CUT TO:
INT- SUB-LEVEL ONE CORRIDOR C
BETH
(looks at the closed door, and then to the airman)
A running tackle, plus I managed to push him back a
bit. My dad would be so proud.
AIRMAN
(very confused)
What the hell did you do that for?! It's just a drill!
No one is stupid enough to attack a U.S. base in the
U.S.! It would cause a huge international incident.
Beth just looks at the airman as if he was the stupidest
man alive. She shakes her head, and starts to walk away.
BETH
If I were you, I'd get some weapons. If you plan
on staying alive, you'll need them.
CUT TO:
INT- SUB-LEVEL THREE MAIN CONTROL ROOM
The alarm is sounding very loudly. But no one in the room
knows why yet. April and Rebecca are working feverishly
on the main computer. Andrews is nearby along with
Daisy, issuing orders.
ANDREWS
I need my cameras!
REBECCA
I'm trying, sir! All cameras have been cut off. None of
the backup power is working either!
APRIL
It's worse than that!
ANDREWS
What do you mean?
APRIL
The cameras have been shut down. On purpose. I
don't see any damage. Someone locked them out of
the system from the inside!
Andrews is about to respond, when sounds start coming
from the outside corridor. Two sounds are the most frequent.
Screaming and gunfire. Through the glass wall of the room, we
can see the corridor. Several MP's are retreating and firing at
a group of vampires.
ANDREWS
(turning back to the others)
Seal this room now!!
Rebecca works the controls as fast as she can. The computer screens
go dark. After a beat, she looks over to the large glass doors.
REBECCA
Done!
CUT TO:
CLOSE-UP OF THE GLASS DOORS
A large thick metal bar shoots out from the wall. It fits right into the door
handles. Then a loud crackling noise is heard.
CUT TO:
INT-CORRIDOR OUTSIDE MAIN CONTROL ROOM
The vampires are easily winning the fight. The ones that
get shot barely slow down, as they attack the MPs. Markus and the
Master come up to look through the glass at Andrews, and the others.
MASTER
(points to a nearby vamp)
You! Open that door!
The vampire nods and reached out for the handle. As soon as
he touches it we hear the crackling noise again. He starts to twitch
violently. He's getting electrocuted. Another vampire runs up, and
knocks him away from the door.
MASTER (CONT'D)
(to Markus)
That was something we were not informed about.
MARKUS
It's not a problem.
He looks around on the ground for a second, and sees what he needs.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN CONTROL ROOM
ANDREWS
(sees what Markus is going to do)
Oh, God. Everyone out the back entrance, now!
Through the glass, we can see Markus. He has picked up a
wounded MP. He winds up with all his vampire strength, and he throws
the MP face first at the wall. The wall section shatters instantly, and
the thrown MP lands on top of a very large piece of wall.
The vampires swarm through the hole in the wall. Two officers in the
room pull out handguns, and start shooting at the vampires.
ANDREWS (CONT'D)
(at the rear entrance)
That doesn't kill them! Pull back now!
Before the officers can follow his orders, a vampire holding a M16 comes in and
starts shooting. The officers don't have a chance, as they are mowed down.
CUT TO:
INT-REAR ENTRANCE STAIRWAY
The gunfire is heard, as Andrew dives in to the stairwell. He slams the door.
Bullets quickly shatter the glass in the door.
ANDREWS
(to everyone)
Move, people!
REBECCA
But, sir! These stairs lead further underground!
ANDREWS
We don't have a choice! Move!
They all take off down the stairs.
CUT TO:
EXT-EARLY MORNING SKY
A unmarked corporate helicopter is flying through the air. We zoom
in through the windows. We see three figures inside.
CUT TO:
INT- HELICOPTER PASSENGER SECTION
Xander, Melissa and Gavin are talking.
XANDER
The pilot says he still can't reach the base. I know
that it's still a start-up operation, but they should have
good equipment.
GAVIN
Which means that they're having a simple power
failure, or something's going down.
XANDER
We don't have a choice, we gotta go in and
find out. I've been in this business too long, not to
expect the worst. Do we have any weapons on board
this thing?
Gavin crosses over to the area under Xanders seat. He presses
a small button and a drawer opens. He slides it out to reveal
a small group of guns.
GAVIN
Got to love the government.
MELISSA
(surprised)
They have weapons on a civilian helicopter?
GAVIN
You'd be surprised the things they started to arm
after the New York attacks a few years ago.
Suddenly, a small 13-inch screen on the opposite side of the
passenger area springs on. It has heavy static, but we can just
make out April's face.
APRIL
Captain Harris? Sir, are you there?
Xander is momentarily startled. He recovers, and moves
over to the screen. He pushes a blue 'Talk' button.
XANDER
(to screen)
Yeah April, we're here. What's going on? We haven't
been able to reach anyone at the base.
APRIL
We're under attack down here! There are vampires everywhere.
GAVIN
(leans over to the screen)
How did they get passed the topside guards?
XANDER
My guess is that there aren't any guards left alive on
the surface. But why would they attack the base? We
haven't really even set up shop yet.
APRIL
Well, there is someone here you know. It's that
Markus guy. I recognized him from the Watcher
Council's files.
XANDER AND MELISSA
(both shocked and at the same time)
MARKUS??
XANDER
How the hell does he know what's going on?!
APRIL
Something is going on here! They're not looking for
you. They're attacking everyone. There won't even be a
base soon! Plus all our systems have gone down!
XANDER
(surprised)
What?! How? Markus would have no clue
how to sabotage a base like that.
APRIL
I don't know how. I'm lucky I was on my own power
before this happened, or I'd be shut down too.
GAVIN
It's much worse, gang. There is no way to shut down
the base, and take out the guards without anyone
finding out in time. We've got a traitor on site.
April's image starts to shake and flash.
XANDER
(quickly)
Hold on, we're on our way back. We should be there
in a few minutes.
APRIL
OK, but hurry! We're all stuck in the library on
Sublevel 7! I don't know who's even still...
Her image goes out in a burst of static.
XANDER
(very determined, grabs a pistol from the weapons drawer)
All right, we just became the cavalry.
MELISSA
(shocked)
What!! You want just us three to save an entire Air
Force base full of vampires by ourselves?!?
XANDER
(inspecting the gun)
It's not just a job, it's an adventure.
GAVIN
(annoyed)
I thought that was the Navy slogan.
XANDER
(shrugs)
It still works.
(turns to Melissa)
I'm not going to try to force you to come with us, but...
MELISSA
(gets a determined look on her face)
What the hell. My family thinks I'm nuts,
I might as well prove them right.
(pulls a gun out of the drawer)
Besides, Markus is down there. I ran from
him once, and I'm not doing that twice.
Melissa starts to grab some ammo clips from the drawer, and
stares at the gun for a few seconds. Then her determined face
falls as she turns to Xander and Gavin.
MELISSA (CONT'D)
Ah, anyone know how to work this thing?
CUT TO:
EXT- HYPERION HOTEL MORNING
CUT TO:
INT- HYPERION HOTEL LOBBY
The lobby is full of people. There are a few groups talking to
each other. We focus on one group sitting on the red couch. It's
Buffy, Willow, Giles, and Kristen.
GILES
I'm so sorry, Kristen. If I had known
about what they did to you...
KRISTEN
(puts her hand on his shoulder)
It's OK. Xander told me that he didn't want to make
you go against the Council again. He thought we
could get away on our own. Plus, you were still
being let back into that circle of idiots. We
thought someone with a brain in there would help
more in the future, rather than now.
WILLOW
So, I hear you and Xander got close during your time
together. I'm just wondering how close...
(she stops)
Let me rephrase that.
BUFFY
It's OK, Will. We're all a bit curious. We haven't really
seen, or heard from Xand in a long time.
KRISTEN
I'm not saying the thought to hook up with Xander
didn't enter my head now and then. But, uh,
I think he has someone else in mind.
(she looks past them)
Buffy, Willow and Giles follow her gaze, to see Cordelia talking
with Fred and Gunn on the other side of the lobby.
WILLOW
Cordy?! I thought they were over long ago?
GILES
(smiles)
The human heart is a funny thing sometimes.
(turns back to Kristen)
I've noticed your necklace. It looks Celtic.
KRISTEN
(surprised)
I'm not sure. We thought either Celtic or Viking.
CUT TO:
KRISTEN'S NECKLACE
It's a gold chain with a thin dark stone hanging
from it. It has an engraved Z on it.
KRISTEN
(smiles)
We were at a Toys 'R Us in New York. Xander had
to stop to see if they had any new 'Episode 3' figures
he wanted.
Buffy and Willow just look at each other,
and start to laugh. Even Giles smiles a bit.
BUFFY
Yeah, that's Xander all right.
KRISTEN
While we were there, I was thinking of going home.
Trying to forget the Slayer thing. Xander tried to talk me
out of it. He knew the Council would be watching my
parents' house. But I just couldn't handle it. Spend the rest
of my life running from the Council, and fighting vampires?
(she gets a slight smile)
But Xander could see that I was scared. When we
were leaving, they had those 50 cent crappy toy
machines in the entryway. Xander got two Rune
necklaces. He gave me one, and he took the other. When
we opened them up, we saw that we each got the same one.
She looks down at the necklace.
KRISTEN (CONT'D)
The little paper that came with them said they were
the Rune of Self Defense. Xander said that it proved
that fate wanted us to stick together, and look out for
each other. It's stupid, but that little necklace helped
me keep it together then.
WILLOW
That's so sweet!
BUFFY
(smiling)
Yep that's Xander, half the time he says the
stupidest things possible, but others...
(she tilts her head a bit)
Come to think of it? I don't think that gold
chain came out of a 50 cent machine.
KRISTEN
(blushing a bit)
Well, it came with a cheap black cord. But it got
ripped off when we were fighting some demon we
came across in Texas. Xander went out early in the
morning. He got the gold chain, put the stone on, and
gave it back to me. He said he used a Watcher's
Council slush account he knew the numbers for.
(she suddenly looks sad)
He has to be OK, he just has to be.
CLOSE IN ON:
KRISTEN'S NECKLACE
We stay on the plastic/stone necklace for a second,
as she nervously plays with it. Then we...
DISSOLVE TO:
A DUPLICATE NECKLACE
This version is attached to the original thin black cord.
It's slightly swinging a bit. We pull out to see it is around Xander's neck.
He is fighting hand to hand with a vampire in the main hangar, near
the back of a parked helicopter. The helicopter has an '03' on its tail.
Xander is struggling to stake the vampire, but he's being held in
the vampire's grip. We can see from his face that he's trying with all
his strength to push the stake home. Suddenly the vamp's leg comes up,
and hits Xander in the gut. Xander is momentarily stunned. This allows
the vampire to grab him, and toss him just behind the tail of the helicopter
The vampire advances on the recovering Xander. When the vamp is a few
feet from him, we...
CUT TO:
CLOSE-UP ON XANDER'S FACE
He is slightly panicked. He glances around for a weapon.
He sees something we don't, and he smiles.
CUT TO:
WIDE SHOT OF XANDER AND THE VAMPIRE
The vampire is slowly inching his way over to Xander. Suddenly
Xander pops halfway up, and kicks the tail rotor of the helicopter as hard
as he can. The blade swings around, and nails the vampire in the head.
While he is now disoriented, Xander plunges the stake into its chest.
It explodes to dust.
Xander leans on the helicopter to rest for a second, but only a second as
another vampire tackles him, and they fall out of frame.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN HANGAR OFFICE
Gavin is losing badly to a big vampire. He tries to throw a punch,
but the vampire grabs his hand in mid-blow, and twists his arm.
The vampire then hurtles him into the locked glass weapons locker.
Gavin flies through the glass, and nails the rack of guns headfirst. He and the
guns fall to the ground. He doesn't get up. The vampire laughs. He starts
to turn to walk away. We hear Gavin groan, and see him start to
move a little. The vampire goes towards him.
BIG VAMPIRE
Looks like I get a little snack.
He reaches down, and slowly turns Gavin on his
back. As he does this, he jumps back in shock.
CUT TO:
SHOT OF GAVIN ON THE GROUND
Gavin has a gash on his forehead that's bleeding. And he also
has a loaded P-90 aimed right at the vamp. He shoots immediately.
The vampire is hit numerous times in the chest. He staggers back,
falling to his knees.
BIG VAMPIRE
You little...! You'll pay for that...
He doesn't finish, because Gavin swings a large
shard of glass that decapitates the vampire.
GAVIN
(yells to the dusted vamp)
Throw a weapons expert into a weapons
locker?! God, you deserved to get dusted.
(starts to walk away, while feeling the gash on his forehead)
Oh, this place better have good health care...
CUT TO:
INT- FAR END OF THE HANGAR
Melissa has locked herself in one of the cars. A female vampire is
pounding on the door, trying to get in. Melissa looks out the car
windows frantically.
MELISSA
(mumbling to herself)
Get chased into a car by the first vamp
you fight! Oh, good job Melissa!
She jumps as the thick side window is starting to crack under the female
vampires' pounding. Melissa checks the ignition, and finds the keys.
MELISSA (CONT'D)
Thank God!
She starts the car, and takes off in the hangar
leaving the female vampire behind.
CUT TO:
INT- HANGAR REAR GARAGE DOOR
A single vampire is walking past the rear door. He suddenly
stops in his tracks as he hears a car engine. He spins around just in
time to see the car hit him head on. The car is going so fast that it
keeps going with the vampire on the hood.
CUT TO:
EXT- REAR HANGAR GARAGE DOOR
The large door breaks, as the car flies into it. The car is severely
Damaged, but keeps going with the vampire still on the hood. Melissa
opens the car door, and jumps out. She hits the ground. A second later the
car hits a tree, and the vampire flies off the hood, and lands on the grass.
He is hurt badly, but too late he realizes he in open sunlight. He catches
on fire, but tries to crawl under the shade of the tree. He doesn't make it,
and goes up in flames.
CUT TO:
INT-HOLE IN THE HANGAR DOOR
The female vamp is standing in the hole, looking at the car wreck
on the tree. She is slightly stunned. She hardly notices Xander come
up next to her.
XANDER
Women drivers, huh?
The vampire barely hears him, and just nods. But a second later,
she realizes who's next to her. She and Xander stare awkwardly at each
other for a beat. Then she turns to attack, but Xander hits home with a
stake before she can do anything.
Xander runs out to a hurt Melissa.
XANDER (CONT'D)
How are you?
MELISSA
(holding her left arm)
I think I sprained my arm.
XANDER
(pulls off one of his shirts)
That's it? I thought for sure you
would have something broken.
He uses the shirt to make a makeshift sling for
her arm. Then they head back into the hangar.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN HANGAR
In the middle of the hangar, Xander and Melissa meet up
with Gavin. Gavin's cut has mostly stopped bleeding.
GAVIN
You guys OK?
XANDER
(motions to Melissa's arm)
Her arm is a little banged up, but we're OK.
GAVIN
Maybe we should wait for some reinforcements to
come? We had a hard time fighting five vamps, there's
still, what? Twenty-five or so left down there?
XANDER
Take it from me. You don't want to live with the
feeling if they all get killed down there when you
could have done something. I don't know about you
two, but I'm going.
Gavin and Melissa share a look and sigh.
MELISSA
We're with you. But this will not be easy. I'm
guessing it's a bit confined down there.
XANDER
(shrugs)
It'll be OK, we should have plenty of room.
GAVIN
(not really believing him)
What? You do a little vamp fighting in an underground base before?
XANDER
Yeah, had a Slayer with me at the time. But we still kicked butt.
Melissa is stunned to hear this, but Gavin is only slightly surprised.
GAVIN
So, wait. You're saying that the rumor Rebecca told me
is true? That you helped shut down the last base set
up to fight vampires?
XANDER
Hey, it's not my fault they created a demon Terminator-wannabe.
And that place should never have been in this line of work.
Check the files after we get out of this. Now come on.
Xander moves them back into the office Gavin was just in.
XANDER (CONT'D)
(starts to go through the small shelves in the locker)
Oh, yeah. This stuff will do fine. Come on guys, we
need all the things we can get.
Gavin goes right for certain items, but Melissa just looks lost.
MELISSA
Can you just give me some ammo for this
thing I took from the helicopter?
XANDER
(hands her a few clips)
Shove these in your pocket. We'll need them. And here...
(picks up a piece of wood frame from the shattered cabinet door)
...take this also.
Melissa takes the wood. They get up, and are ready to
leave when Xander notices something off-screen.
XANDER (CONT'D)

INT-MAIN HALLWAY SUB-LEVEL ONE
We are at the main elevator. Right where Beth was a little while ago.
Now, there are three vampires standing guard. They are joking
with each other. We join them mid-conversation.
VAMP #1
Don't they know how hard it is to fix bullet
holes? I had that jacket for 22 years!
VAMP #2
(searching the dead MPs bodies)
Do you ever stop talking?
(he finds something)
Look at this...
(holds up a small picture of the MP's family)
VAMP #1
(looks at the picture)
The oldest girl doesn't look so bad.
VAMP #2
(shakes his head)
Get your head out of the gutter, man.
All three vampires look up, when the status light on the panel changes.
VAMP #3
Someone's coming down!
VAMP #1
Good. I get to have me some more fun.
The vampires get in fighting position in front of the doors. The doors
open, and the vamps move to attack but stop suddenly.
CUT TO:
INT-MAIN ELEVATOR
Xander is in front holding a small flame-thrower.
CUT TO:
CLOSE UP ON XANDER'S FACE
Xander gives a small grin.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN HALLWAY
The vamps try to run, but Xander is too quick. A line of flame
shoots out, and the vamps are hit. The first one takes only a second
to turn to dust. The other two try to take off down the hallway. But
Xander jumps off the elevator, and fires again. It catches them in the
back. They fall to the floor, and a second later are dusted. Gavin
and Melissa come out, as Xander takes off the empty flame-thrower.
XANDER
I'm losing my touch, I can't think of any smart-ass comment right now.
GAVIN
(pats Xander on the back)
Don't worry. The way this is going, I'm sure you'll have another chance.
(he points left)
But for now, the second elevator is down this way.
XANDER
Am I the only one who thinks it's stupid to have to
take two elevators?
As they run off-screen, a vampire comes into view. She is holding a small radio.
VAMPIRE
(into radio)
They're going for the elevator.
CUT TO:
INT- SUB-LEVEL TWO ELEVATOR DOORS
This area is slightly smaller than the one on the first level. Two
vampires are standing on either side of the doors. As soon as they open,
the undead duo dive into the elevator.
CUT TO:
INT- SUB-LEVEL TWO CORRIDOR
We are a bit away from the elevator, but we can see the doors are
still open. For a spilt second nothing happens, but then...
BOOM. An explosion takes out the inside of the elevator.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN STAIRWAY
Gavin, Xander, and Melissa are moving past Sub-level four.
GAVIN
Did you have to blow up the elevator? Do you know
how hard that's going to be to fix?
XANDER
Had to be done. I'm starting to enjoy this.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT- SUB-LEVEL SEVEN STAIRWAY DOOR
The door opens a crack, and Xander's head pops out. He looks
down the corridor, and then closes the door.
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN STAIRWAY
XANDER
(unsure)
This is wrong. This is way too easy. There are only
three vamps out there. And they're not trying to get
into where everyone's holed up. They look like
they're on guard duty.
GAVIN
That is weird. And you know what else? This is a top-secret base.
The communications blackout should have been like a
red flag for the Pentagon. Plus with what our
helicopter pilot is telling his commander after he
dropped us off? This base should be swarming with
Marines any time now.
XANDER
(nodding)
And these vampires don't seem to be in any hurry. It's
as if they know no help is coming.
MELISSA
Why would they think that? This isn't some one-tree
fort. They have to know the good guys are coming.
XANDER
Unless...
MELISSA
Unless, what?
XANDER
What Gavin thought on the helicopter. No one could
take out the cameras, and attack topside without an
inside man.
GAVIN
(not liking this)
And that inside man is somehow making sure the
boys at the Pentagon think everything is fine here.
(gets confused)
But why? They have to be after something. What
about all those files you had April download?
XANDER
(considers that)
True. The vamps wouldn't stand a chance going
against the Council's offices in London. But there's
no way they could have known that we have them.
We just downloaded them last night...
MELISSA
(interrupting)
Can we do the hypothesizing some other time? We
have get past three vampires in the hallway right now!
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL SEVEN STAIRWAY DOOR
Melissa, by herself, bursts out of the stairway and runs towards the vamps.
MELISSA
(in her best scared little girl voice)
What's going on here? There are all these
weird people everywhere. And...
She stops, when the vampires face morph. She runs back the way she came.
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL SEVEN STAIRWAY
Gavin and Xander are on the sides of the stairwell. Melissa
runs screaming past them, and heads up the stairs.
Two of the vampires run after her into the stairs.
Xander and Gavin both stick out their makeshift stakes,
and the vamps never know what hit them as they burst into dust.
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL SEVEN CORRIDOR
The three walk out of the stairs calmly with Xander in the lead. The
last remaining vampire looks at them with hate.
XANDER
(as he gets closer to the vamp, very calm)
God, this must just suck. Your two buddies getting dusted by a
bunch of kids? I feel your pain man, I really do. Now...
The vampire grabs Xander, and shoves him up against the wall. Xander
stays calm, so does Gavin. Melissa shows that she is a little uneasy.
VAMPIRE
(very angry and in Xander's face)
You think you're tough! Those two were losers
anyway. But I know who you are. You're that
asshole Harris, one of the Slayer's friends.
XANDER
(still calm, almost happy)
Really? I'm known in the demon community? Hey
Gavin, I've got a got a rep with the vampires.
VAMPIRE
(not amused)
You had one, kid. Now, you're just a snack..
XANDER
You know, in that case you might need this.
(holds out a half-used roll of TUMS)
I'm betting I'd give you heartburn. In fact, I'm sure of it.
Xander's other hand pulls out an emergency road flare he had
under his shirt. He lights it, and the vampire jumps back from the
sudden flame. But Xander is moving fast. He grabs the vamp's belt
buckle, and pulls open his jeans. He drops the flare down the vampire's
pants, and quickly backs away.
In moments, the flame is burning the vampire's clothes. He starts to scream.
VAMPIRE
(jumping around, trying to do something, anything)
Get it out! Get it out!
His entire body catches on fire. He falls to his knees and collapses.
A split second later, he turns to dust. All that's left is a smoking pile of ash.
XANDER
(tosses the roll of TUMS into the ash)
Yeah, you'll definitely need those.
Gavin and Melissa follow Xander to the swinging doors
that lead to the library.
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL THREE MAIN CONTROL ROOM
The room is still a mess, and the main computer is shut down.
The Master is admiring the room, as Markus approaches her.
MASTER
Markus, look at this place. It's a shame that we have
to live in caves, and tunnels. While these worthless
mortals get all these great toys, and dwellings.
MARKUS
It will not be like that for much longer, Master. Soon, we
will rise up back to our rightful place as this world's rulers.
MASTER
(a bit surprised)
Don't tell me you bought into all that crap our employers
told us? We are just tools to them. We are the foot
soldiers, nothing more. But that doesn't mean we
can't have fun. Come, we are almost ready to begin.
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL SEVEN LIBRARY
Xander, Gavin, and Melissa are past the barricaded doors.
In the background, we can see MPs re-barricading the doors. In the
library are Andrews, Rebecca, Daisy, April, Beth, six MPs, and a
dozen various staff members. Daisy is tending to Melissa's arm with
a first aid kit, while Andrews is talking to Xander and Gavin.
ANDREWS
You say you three just fought your way down here?
You would have had to go through over twenty
vampires. Plus, who's the civilian you brought back
without clearance?
XANDER
(holds up his hands)
Hold on there, General. That's Melissa. She saved
my life in the city, plus she has a history with Markus.
ANDREWS
(insistent)
But she's still a civilian. She shouldn't be here.
XANDER
(looks at him)
It was her choice. And if she didn't come here with us,
then she would have gone after Markus on her own and
gotten herself killed. I think you said something about
me leading a team? A leader's got to have the right people.
ANDREWS
(thinks about it)
And you think she's the right people?
XANDER
(sure)
I'm betting on it.
ANDREWS
You're betting a lot on it. Now, what's it like up there?
Have the reinforcements arrived yet?
Gavin and Xander share a look.
GAVIN
Ah, sir? We don't think anybody's coming. We think
this may be an inside job.
REBECCA
An inside job? How could a vampire attack be an
inside job? You think those things planned this?
XANDER
Don't think that the vamps here are like any crappy late night
movie you've ever watched. I've meet some very
smart ones in my time.
REBECCA
OK, I get it. Don't underestimate them.
Andrews is about to say something, when a yell
from April causes them to turn around.
APRIL
The cameras!
Everyone goes over to where April is. They can see
that the camera monitors have come back online.
REBECCA
(tries to work the controls)
I can get the inside cameras, but not the outside ones.
XANDER
(leans in)
We need to see what the hell is going on. Try the
control room. I'm guessing that's where they are.
The screen switches views from a hallway to the main control room.
There are at least 18 vampires besides Markus, and the Master present.
One vamp is painting a large pentagram on the floor.
REBECCA
(confused)
A pentagram? What, are they into human sacrifices too?
XANDER
(looks at her)
A pentagram is used for a lot of things. Most of them bad.
(studies the screen)
If I had to guess... I'd say that they were doing a containment spell.
ANDREWS
A what?!
XANDER
(leans on the desk)
A containment spell. They're normally used to keep
other monsters at bay. One kept the vampire Master
of Sunnydale imprisoned underground for decades.
MELISSA
(squints at the screen)
What the hell is that thing? I don't think
that it's from around here.
Xander turns back and looks. As soon as he sees the screen,
he stares in disbelief. It's his turn to be shocked. Very shocked.
XANDER
(mumbling)
That's not possible. That thing was transferred to the Council
vaults years ago. Oh, this just got a million times worse.
ANDREWS
What? What the hell is it?
We push past Xander to see the screen. On it is something Xander
hasn't seen in years. And hoped never to see again. A life-sized statue.
A statue named... ACATHLA.
CUT TO:
INT-MAIN CONTROL ROOM
The Master and Markus are admiring Acathla.
MASTER
(annoyed)
I can't believe that we have to use this thing.
MARKUS
(confused)
But Master, don't you want Xander Harris to suffer?
MASTER
(rolls her eyes)
Yes, Markus, I do. But I wanted to end his life. Not use this
thing to do it. I was even thinking of turning him to our side.
MARKUS
(forcefully)
Soon Master, he will wish he had become one of us.
CUT TO:
INT-SUB-LEVEL SEVEN LIBRARY
Xander is still in shock, while the others are
not sure what the statue could do.
DAISY
What can that thing do?
XANDER
(looks at them all)
Look, I know you guys don't believe half of what
you've heard about me, or my life the last few years.
But this is huge. I'm talking 'end of the world' huge here.
(points to the screen)
I've run across that thing before. Here is
the short version. It opens a portal.
DAISY
A portal to where?
XANDER
Hell, or a hell dimension. I'm not entirely sure on that part.
But the kicker is when that thing is activated, the portal grows.
It can go from a few inches to city-size in a
few hours. And it will not stop there.
GAVIN
(it's all sinking in)
OK then, what does this have to do with that
containment spell you mentioned?
XANDER
Well, at first I wasn't sure. But I'm guessing, what's
going on here? They turned the cameras back on, so I
could see what they're doing.
MELISSA
But why would they want us to see this?
XANDER
(his face very serious)
Because they know I'm going to die trying
to stop them. And with no Slayer...
MALE O.S. VOICE
They are counting on that, kid.
Everyone spins on the new voice. The MPs aim their weapons.
We quickly pan over, but see no one. Then a man comes out of the
shadows. The MPs take aim.
XANDER
(jumps up, and gets in front of the MPs)
Hold your fire!
He turns to Whistler.
XANDER (CONT'D)
(to the newcomer)
Why the hell are you here? I thought that
you mostly did visits to Buffy and Angel.
WHISTLER
(shrugs)
That's the great thing about working for the Powers, kid. I
get a great travel plan. Never been in a top-secret base before.
ANDREWS
(incensed)
How did you get in here?!
WHISTLER
Calm down, old timer. I'm here to help, and all that.
(to Xander)
We don't got much time here, kid.
XANDER
(amused)
You're going to help? I thought you were just the
messenger for the Powers. That you didn't get into
any of the fighting?
WHISTLER
(annoyed)
I'm fighting in my own way. Now I need you to listen. Buddy,
you recently graduated into something big. And up till now, you've
been just the sidekick. That ends here.
XANDER
(a little surprised)
Look, I have to get along to my big ugly
death upstairs, so can we hurry this up?
WHISTLER
The Powers have a very old deal with the forces of
gloom and doom. Each side can only have so many
champions. Hence the one Slayer thing. Well, one of
the good guys in Russia just served his purpose.
XANDER
That's the nice way of saying he's dead, right?
WHISTLER
(shrugs)
You bet. It was his time. But as usual, he stopped
what he needed to stop. Which means a new opening
for your side. And we just happen to have your résumé on file.
XANDER
Gee, thanks. But I'm not the best to go up against the
stuff they do. That pesky mortal thing keeps getting
in the way.
WHISTLER
We thought of that. So, if your friends will move up a bit...
As if some unseen force is pushing them Gavin, Rebecca, and
Melissa move up to where Xander is. They all look at each other.
Whistler waves his hand. New wristwatches appear on their wrists.
Each one is different.
MELISSA
(shocked)
What in the hell!
WHISTLER
These are your new powers.
(off Xander's look)
You see, each one contains a piece of a crystal. A very powerful old crystal.
Whistler waves his hand over the watches again. As soon as he
does, a green glow comes from all the watches that quickly encases the
four. They wince in pain. Then as suddenly as it started, it's over.
The glow disappears.
XANDER
(very angry)
What the hell was that!?!
WHISTLER
Sorry. Had to activate them. They had to bond with
you. Now, you have the entire bionic man bit.
(points to Beth)
And now for you.
BETH
(shocked)
Me? What would you want with me? I'm just a...
WHISTLER
Doesn't matter what you were.
(puts his hand on her forehead. A green
glow passes from his hand to her head)
There you go.
(walks back to Xander)
Now, any help you need can come from her.
XANDER
I have a demon that can suck the planet into
Hell waiting for me, so what is going on?!
WHISTLER
Jeez, do you guys always have to be so bossy? These
crystals are part of a larger crystal. I don't even know
what its name is. But old Beth here now has all the
knowledge we have to give you about them. Just
remember one thing. The power can only be used
for a short amount of time. Right now I'd say a few
hours, but in time you can move that up.
XANDER
Thanks, I think.
WHISTLER
I live to serve, kid. Now if you'll excuse
me? I have a meeting to get to.
With that he just walks into the shadows, and disappears.
REBECCA
Can someone tell me what the hell just happened?
XANDER
Whistler is a messenger for the Powers That Be.
Which is another thing I'll explain later.
(He looks over the people in the room)
My guess is this. They're setting up the
containment spell to have the hell portal open
just in the base.
MELISSA
Why would they want it just here?
XANDER
This base is somehow a threat to 'em. I'm betting
that someone else is pulling the strings here. They
just didn't find Acathla laying by the side of the
road. If they killed me, and all of you, then the
government would just assemble a new team. But if
this base is in Hell...
GAVIN
So no base, no team.
REBECCA
That's stupid! We have an entire country to set up
shop. They can't think that one base is all that we're
going to use?!
XANDER
No time for debate. If they do one thing wrong with
that containment spell, the whole world will pay the price.
(turns to April)
April, are you very mobile outside of this base?
APRIL
Yes, my main CPU is down two levels along with the
main computer core.
XANDER
OK, General? Is there another way out of here,
besides the elevator to the hangar?
ANDREWS
There is a small service ladder off of Sub-level 10 that
comes up about a mile south of here. If we could get to it.
XANDER
(his mind made up)
This is what we're going to do. Gavin, Melissa,
Rebecca, and I will head up to level three to try to
stop them. The rest of you grab April's CPU on the
way out, and hit the escape ladder.
ANDREWS
(angry)
I am NOT going to abandon my base...
XANDER
(firm)
If I were you, I'd be more interested in the bigger
picture! Your personnel are about to be sucked into
Hell. What exactly do you plan to do to stop it?
Andrews look at him, and grudgingly admits Xander has a point.
XANDER (CONT'D)
We'll try to stop them, but anything can happen.
So we all just gotta do what we can here.
ANDREWS
(still not liking it)
Alright. We will evac, but if we don't hear anything
after twenty minutes, we are coming back in.
CUT TO:
INT-MAIN ROOM
There is a bright flash of light that fills the screen, but then slowly
dies away as we see Markus and the Master smiling.
MASTER
It is done, now all we need to do is play poke the demon.
She puts down the spell book, and grabs a sword from a bag.
XANDER OFF SCREEN
You know, that's so not going to come out of the floor.
We're going to need a giant rug to cover up the pentagram.
The vampires spin to the forgotten stairway door.
CUT TO
INT-FLOOR NEAR THE DOOR
We quickly pan up from the floor to see Xander, Gavin,
Melissa, and Rebecca standing tall in front of the door. We hold on
them for a few seconds, then the camera goes over their heads, and
spins back so we are now viewing from behind them. The vampires
rush them. Our four heroes know they have little chance,
but they go in anyway.
Xander is the first to encounter a vamp. He barely ducks the
vampire's punch, then he throws a punch of his own. His punch connects,
and the vampire flies halfway across the room. The room goes silent,
and nobody moves. You could hear a pin drop.
Xander looks at his fist in shock, then
his shock turns into a large smile.
XANDER
Hell, yeah! I'm going to like this.
Two vamps run at Gavin. He starts to brace himself for the attack when
suddenly he jumps clear over them. He lands behind them. Before the
vampires can react Gavin stakes them from behind. As the dust falls,
Gavin runs though them off-screen.
CUT TO:
CLOSE UP ON A VAMPIRE'S GAME FACE
A large vampire is growling like a wild animal. We pull out to
see him right in front of Melissa. The vampire is not budging, but
we can tell he is trying to move.
GAVIN
(runs up to Melissa)
You doing this?!
MELISSA
(nodding, but not understanding how)
I think so!
Melissa grabs one of Gavin's stakes. She shoves the
stake into the vampire... but nothing happens.
MELISSA (CONT'D)
(to Gavin, while the vamp is squirming in pain)
Ah, how come he's not turning to dust?
GAVIN
You're a bit high.
Gavin pulls out his other stake, and stakes her vampire
in the heart. Melissa is about to say something, but before she can
another vampire tackles Gavin.
PULL BACK TO:
INT- SHOT OF THE ENTIRE ROOM FROM ABOVE
The battle is in full swing. The four good guys are each
fighting off a few vampires. In the far left of the screen we can see
two vampires grabbing M-16s off of the meeting table. We zoom in to
them, as they smile to each other as they take aim.
CUT TO:
REBECCA AND XANDER
They are fighting back to back. They are both fighting with moves
that they never knew they could do. Rebecca dusts a vamp, and spins
around to fight another one. But the vamp is no longer there. The vampires
they were fighting have all moved back. They are trapped between the
undead. Rebecca and Xander look at each other confused, until Xander
looks over to another part of the room.
XANDER
(his face falls)
Oh, crap!
CUT TO:
THE VAMPS WITH THE M-16s
They smile, as they pull the triggers. The sound of the guns is deafening.
CUT TO:
BACK TO REBECCA AND XANDER
They try to hit the floor, but there is no time. Instinctively
Xander throws his body in front of Rebecca. We go in tight on Xander's
Face, as he knows he's about to die. He squeezes his eyes shut.
A moment passes, then two. Still nothing happens. Xander
slowly opens his eyes. He looks back to the two vampires, and sees
them just staring at him. Xander gets up. We notice a circular
blue energy shield attached to his arm.
The bullets are lying still smoking on the ground.
Xander just looks totally shocked.
XANDER
Looks like we got all the extra features...
Then he takes off running at full speed at the two vampires.
The vampires start shooting madly at him. But Xander has his 'shield'
up and the bullets don't go near him.
He jumps and tackles both vampires. As soon as he starts
fighting hand to hand with them, his shield dissolves. He stakes
one of the vamps, but the other one gets away, and joins with the
large group of vamps that are left. The fighting continues for a bit,
and soon all four good guys are fighting next to each
other. They are backed up against a wall.
The 11 minion vampires that are left surround them.
Gavin looks at his teammates.
GAVIN
Anybody got any ideas? New powers or not, this might get ugly.
XANDER
(steps forward)
Here goes nothing.
He raises his right hand and points his palm at the vampires.
XANDER (CONT'D)
Ignite!
A stream of fire comes out his hands, and hits many vampires
head on. After a few seconds only two vampires are left,
the Master and Markus.
GAVIN
(stunned)
If you could do that, then why the
hell did you need the flame-thrower?!
XANDER
(shrugs)
It's never worked before! I've tried it dozens of times
and it never worked! Whatever the Powers gave us
must have helped. I have got to tell Willow!
Markus stands in front of the Master.
MARKUS
Continue, my master. I will finish Xander Harris for
good this time!
XANDER
'For good this time'. Good god man,
only comic book villains talk like that!
Markus charges, but Xander moves very fast, and
Markus goes past him. As he is passing, Xander throws a backhanded
punch that hits the back of Markus' head. Markus falls to the
ground. Quickly Xander picks him up, and throws him
at the Master. Markus collides with his Master, and they both go
down. Markus recovers fast, and stands up ready for more battle.
At the same time, Xander grabs the Master's fallen sword. He
is waiting for Markus, as he gets back up. They stare at each other
for a spilt second. Then...
XANDER (CONT'D)
Doesn't your life just suck!?
He swings the sword with all his might. It cleanly decapitates Markus.
His headless body falls, and explodes into dust.
Xander is very happy for a moment, and then his
smile changes to a frown. He looks to Gavin.
XANDER (CONT'D)
I said "life", didn't I? Ah, crap.
(looks at Markus' ashes)
I meant to say UN-life! From now on, I'm
thinking up my puns beforehand.
He walks over to where the Master is attempting to get up.
Xander puts the tip of the sword to her neck.
XANDER (CONT'D)
It's over. No funny world-destroying demon
playmates for you, young lady.
MASTER
(looks up at Xander with contempt)
It's over all right, but not the way you think.
(shouts)
Computer! Program Epsilon!
Everyone spins to look at the main computer terminal.
It switches on. And a voice rings out through the room.
COMPUTER VOICE
Self-destruct activated. This base will self-destruct in 30 seconds.
A countdown starts on the main screen.
REBECCA
How?! It was on shutdown mode. Only the General or I could...
MASTER
(laughs)
It was our backup plan, fool. I'd rather have seen you all
sucked into Hell, but this way works too.
She looks up at Xander.
MASTER (CONT'D)
You can't stop it. We made sure of that. You see, they wanted
you out of the way as soon as possible. They didn't
mention you getting any powers, but that doesn't matter
now. Enjoy the rest of your very short life.
The Master pulls out a stake from her belt. She smiles at Xander
for a second, and then plunges the stake into her own heart.
She turns to dust.
XANDER
(very worried, and turns to the others)
Any ideas?!
They all look scared. But they all shake their heads.
GAVIN
(nothing he can do)
It's been a blast, guys.
They look at the screen.
CUT TO:
INT-CLOSE UP ON THE COMPUTER SCREEN

EXT- THE SURFACE
Andrews, Daisy, and Beth are standing on the road just
outside the main gate. Most of the others from the library are
there too. Three MPs are holding a large metal cylinder with a computer
pad on it. The world APRIL is on the top of the cylinder.
ANDREWS
It's been too long, I'm going back in.
DAISY
But Mark, we have to wait till help comes.
ANDREWS
I'm not letting them defend my base, with me sitting
on my ass out here!
He starts to head to the gate, when suddenly the ground starts to shake.
Slowly at first, then it picks up fast.
DAISY
Is it an earthquake?!
ANDREWS
(looking at the main hangar in the distance with shock)
Dear God! No!
CUT TO:
INT- MAIN HANGAR
The ground starts to crack, and then spots cave in. The cars,
and the helicopter crash into each other as they fall in the new hole.
The car alarms start blaring. Gas starts to vent from exposed pipes.
CUT TO:
CLOSE-UP ON THE ELVATATOR DOORS
A huge explosion rips out the doors, sending them flying.
Flames start to head for the weapons locker.
CUT TO:
EXT- OUTSIDE THE MAIN GATE
Andrews and the others watch helplessly, as a huge fireball
rips through the roof of the hangar. The ground continues to
shake, as cracks start to appear in the road.
ANDREWS
(horrified)
Everyone head down the road! NOW!!
They all take off running. The road caves in behind them.
As they are running, a VERY large explosion is heard. As
soon as they are safe, Andrews looks back.
CUT TO:

There is a large crater about a mile across away from the main
gate. It's about thirty feet deep. The torn-up roof of the hangar is just
a tiny bit of the debris inside the crater. We can see pieces of the steel
framework twisted and melted.
